Red is the most historically dominant colour in hand-knotted rug weaving. Madder root, one of the oldest and most stable natural dyes known to weavers, produces a spectrum of reds from warm brick and terracotta through to deep crimson and burgundy, and it has been used in Afghan, Pakistani, Persian, and Turkish rug production for centuries. The deep, layered reds of Khal Mohammadi rugs, the bright geometric reds of Kazak designs, and the formal crimson fields of Bokhara gul patterns are all defining expressions of what madder-dyed wool can produce.
Red rugs are the most traditional choice for a formal living room or dining room, and they are also among the most durable, madder red is one of the most lightfast of all natural dyes and holds its colour better than almost any other.
