Blue is one of the most historically significant colours in Oriental rug weaving. Indigo, derived from the Indigofera plant, was one of the earliest and most prized natural dyes available to weavers across Afghanistan, Persia, and Turkey, and deep indigo blues appear in some of the oldest surviving hand-knotted rugs in museum collections. The colour ranges from navy and midnight blue through to soft powder blue and slate, depending on the concentration of dye and the wool's base tone.
