Green is one of the rarer colors in traditional hand-knotted rug weaving, which makes genuine vegetable-dyed green pieces particularly desirable. Historically, stable green dyes were difficult to achieve; most traditional methods involved overdyeing indigo blue over a yellow base, which produced greens ranging from soft sage and olive through to deep forest and emerald. The layered nature of these dyes gives green rugs a complexity and depth that single-dye colors rarely achieve.
Green rugs work well in rooms with natural light, where the color shifts and deepens throughout the day.
