The age of a Turkish vintage rug is visible in several specific ways. The colors in pieces dyed before the mid-twentieth century shift from deep saturated tones to a warmer, more complex palette as natural dyes age and mellow. Madder-based reds develop a brick-terracotta quality. Indigo blues become softer and more nuanced. Ivory grounds from undyed wool develop a warm cream tone. This process of natural mellowing is called abrash when it appears as subtle horizontal color variation across the field, and it is one of the most prized visual qualities in vintage and antique textile collecting. A piece with strong natural abrash is showing you directly that its dyes are genuine vegetable materials responding naturally to age and light, not synthetic dyes applied uniformly by machine.
Vintage Turkish rugs work exceptionally well in contemporary interiors precisely because of what their age has done to their palette. The mellowed, complex tones that result from decades of natural dye aging coordinate naturally with the warm neutrals, natural materials, and layered textures that dominate current interior design.
