Hand-Knotted Afghan and Oriental Runner Rugs for Hallways and Staircases

Runner rugs are defined by their proportions. They are significantly longer than they are wide, designed specifically for the spaces that standard area rugs cannot serve well. A hallway that is three feet wide and twelve feet long calls for a runner. So does a staircase, a narrow kitchen galley, a long entryway corridor, or the space beside a bed. These are some of the most walked-on surfaces in any home, which means the rug you put there needs to be genuinely durable, not just decorative.

Every runner in our collection is hand-knotted using premium wool, the same quality of construction we apply to our area rugs. Afghan runners are the backbone of the collection, hand-knotted in Afghanistan using Ghazni wool and natural vegetable dyes in the same tribal traditions that produce our Kazak, Bokhara, Khal Mohammadi, and Kilim area rugs. These are hard-wearing pieces built for daily foot traffic, and the quality of hand-spun wool means they resist crushing, hold their pattern clearly for decades, and develop a natural patina with age rather than simply wearing out. We also carry Turkish and Persian-influenced runners with floral and geometric designs that suit more formal hallway settings.

Runners come in a wide range of lengths. Smaller runners under six feet work well beside beds, in small entryways, or in front of kitchen counters. Mid-range runners from eight to twelve feet are the most popular for standard hallways and staircases. Long runners from twelve to twenty feet and beyond suit grand entrance halls, open-plan corridors, and gallery-style spaces. The width of most runners falls between two and three and a half feet, though wider pieces exist for broader hallways.

Choosing the right runner size is straightforward. Measure your hallway length and subtract about six inches on each end for fringe clearance, leaving the floor visible at both ends rather than running the rug wall to wall. For staircases, a runner that is slightly narrower than the tread width looks most intentional and allows the stair edges to frame the rug on either side.

We carry hand-knotted runner rugs in a wide range of designs, lengths, and widths. Every piece is one of a kind and ships free worldwide.
