Authentic Afghan and Turkish Hand-Woven Kilim Rugs

Kilim rugs represent one of the oldest and most continuously practiced weaving traditions on earth, produced by hand across Afghanistan, Turkey, and Central Asia for thousands of years. The word kilim describes any flat-woven textile where the pattern is created entirely by interlacing colored wool threads, producing a graphic, tapestry-like surface with no pile. What many buyers discover, however, is that not all kilims are purely flat-woven. Some of the most sought-after pieces in our collection, particularly Afghan Mashwani kilims, combine flat weave and hand-knotted pile in the same rug. In a Mashwani, sections of flat weave and raised pile alternate across the surface, creating a three-dimensional texture and visual depth that a standard Kilim simply cannot achieve. It takes more skill and more time to weave, and the result is unlike anything else in the handmade rug world.

Our kilim collection draws primarily from Afghan weaving traditions, where tribal artisans continue producing flat-weave and combination kilims using natural wool and traditional dyes in deep reds, midnight blues, burnt oranges, warm ivory, and earthy tones. We also carry hand-woven Turkish kilims, known for their bold Anatolian geometric patterns of diamonds, stars, zigzags, and stylized tribal symbols, each one carrying meaning that weavers encoded into the textile over centuries of practice.

Every kilim in our collection is entirely handmade and one of a kind. The slight color variations that appear across a hand-dyed wool kilim, what rug collectors call abrash, are not imperfections. They are the signature of wool dyed in small batches by hand, and they give each piece a depth and warmth that machine production cannot replicate.

Kilim rugs suit a wide range of spaces and uses. Their flat construction makes them easy to clean, lightweight, and naturally well-suited to high-traffic areas including hallways, entryways, dining rooms, and kitchens. They layer beautifully over larger rugs, work as wall hangings, and complement interiors from bohemian and eclectic to modern and minimalist. We carry hand-knotted kilim rugs from small accent sizes through large room-sized pieces, as well as kilim runner rugs for hallways and staircases.

We carry kilim rugs in all standard sizes from small accent pieces through large room-sized rugs and runners.
