Serapi Rugs - Authentic Hand-Knotted Persian Heriz and Serapi Carpets

Serapi rugs are among the most boldly beautiful and most practically suited Persian carpets ever produced. Made in the villages of the Heriz region in northwestern Iran - the same mountainous territory that produces the related Heriz rug - Serapi rugs are distinguished by a combination of visual power and functional durability that has made them perennial favorites with collectors, interior designers, and buyers who want a genuinely remarkable rug that can handle everyday life.

The Serapi design vocabulary is unmistakable. A large geometric medallion, angularly drawn rather than curvilinear, anchors the center of a field filled with bold geometric palmettes, angular leaves, and stylized animals, all rendered in a palette of warm terracotta, faded madder red, midnight navy, ivory, and soft gold. The geometric interpretation of what in other Persian traditions are curvilinear floral elements gives Serapi rugs their distinctive angular energy - they have the warmth and botanical richness of the great Persian carpet tradition but expressed through a geometric vocabulary that feels more tribal and more immediate.

Serapi rugs are generally antique or vintage pieces - production of the type as traditionally defined dates primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Contemporary rugs made in the Heriz region in the Serapi format and palette are often called Serapi-style or Heriz rugs. Both the original antique pieces and quality contemporary production in the Serapi format are represented in our collection.
