Rug Restoration & Repair Service

A worn, damaged, or faded hand-knotted rug is rarely beyond saving. At ALRUG we offer a professional restoration and repair service for hand-knotted Oriental, Persian, Afghan, and Pakistani rugs - whether you bought it from us or anywhere else.

Every restoration job is handled by master weavers with over five decades of combined experience in hand-knotted rug repair. These are genuine craftspeople who understand how hand-knotted rugs are made, which means they know exactly how to restore them - knot by knot, pile by pile - in a way that respects the original construction and makes the repair invisible.

What We Restore

Our restoration service covers the full range of damage that hand-knotted rugs encounter over a lifetime of use.

Reweaving and hole repair - Holes, rips, tears, and worn-through areas are rewoven by hand, knot by knot, matching the original pattern, pile height, and wool character of the surrounding area. In a quality restoration the repair becomes invisible.

Fringe and edge repair - Frayed, missing, or damaged fringe is replaced using wool that matches the original. Damaged selvages, sides, and corners are rebuilt to restore the structural integrity of the foundation rather than just the appearance.

Color and area restoration - Faded areas, sun-bleached sections, and color loss from water damage or cleaning chemicals are carefully restored to match the surrounding pile. Our craftspeople work with natural and synthetic dyes to achieve color matches that hold over time.

Moth and pest damage - Areas destroyed by moth larvae or carpet beetles are treated and rewoven, returning strength and pattern to the affected sections.

Water and flood damage - Water damage causes dye bleed, mildew growth, and foundation rot if left untreated. We dry, treat, clean, and structurally repair water-damaged rugs - but speed matters. The sooner a water-damaged rug reaches us the more we can save.

Re-stretching and reshaping - Rugs that have buckled, curled, or gone out of square are blocked and reshaped to lie flat again.

Antique and heirloom revival - Antique Persian, Oriental, Afghan, and Pakistani pieces that have accumulated significant wear over decades or centuries are assessed individually. We approach antique restoration with particular care - the goal is to stabilize and revive, not to make a century-old piece look factory-fresh.

Why Choose ALRUG for Restoration

Genuine weavers not a cleaning franchise. Our restoration is handled by craftspeople with over five decades of experience in hand-knotted rug repair. They understand the construction of hand-knotted rugs because they have spent their careers working with them - not cleaning synthetic carpet.

Hand reweaving not patching. We do not patch or glue damaged areas. Every structural repair is done by hand reweaving - tying new knots into the existing foundation to match the original construction. This is the only repair method that lasts.

Honest assessments. If a repair is not worth the cost, or if a rug is better left as it is, we will tell you. We would rather give you an honest assessment than sell you a service that does not deliver value.

Any rug, any origin. We restore rugs purchased from ALRUG and rugs purchased anywhere else. Persian antiques, modern Afghan pieces, vintage Turkish kilims - all are welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you restore rugs I did not buy from ALRUG? Yes. We restore any genuine hand-knotted rug regardless of where it was purchased - antique, vintage, or modern, Persian, Afghan, Turkish, or Pakistani.

How much does restoration cost? The cost depends entirely on the rug and the work required, which is why the assessment is free. Simple fringe repairs are relatively modest. Full reweaving of a large antique is a more significant investment. We provide a detailed estimate before any work begins so you can make an informed decision.

How long does restoration take? Simple repairs can be completed quickly. Full reweaving of significant damage on an antique piece can take several weeks. We will give you a realistic timeline with your estimate.

How do I ship my rug safely? Roll the rug pile-side in - never fold it. Wrap it in brown paper or a clean sheet, then in plastic to protect against moisture. Place in a sturdy cardboard tube or box. Use a tracked insured shipping service. We will provide full packaging guidance when you confirm your assessment.

Can water-damaged rugs be saved? Often yes, if they reach us quickly. Water damage causes dye bleed, mildew, and foundation rot that worsens with time. If your rug has been water-damaged contact us immediately for priority assessment.

Will the repair be visible? In a quality hand reweaving repair the repaired area becomes invisible or nearly so. We match the wool, the pile height, and the dye color to the surrounding area. For antique pieces with significant age patina a perfect match is more challenging but we always explain what is achievable before beginning work.

Do you offer pickup and delivery? We accept rugs shipped to our restoration workshop from anywhere in the United States. International shipping is also possible - contact us to discuss.
