Authentic Hand-Knotted Afghan Gabbeh Rugs with Thick Wool Pile

Gabbeh rugs are among the most distinctive handmade rugs in the world. They were first woven by the nomadic Qashqai and Luri tribes in the Zagros Mountains of southwestern Iran, carried across hundreds of miles of seasonal migration routes on portable ground looms. The word gabbeh comes from Farsi meaning raw or unfinished, which tells you everything about their character. These are not formal city rugs with intricate repeating patterns worked out on paper before weaving begins. A gabbeh weaver works from memory and imagination, placing geometric shapes, animals, abstract figures, and fragments of daily life wherever the design calls for them. No two gabbehs are ever the same, and that is entirely the point.

Our gabbeh collection is hand-knotted in Afghanistan, where artisans have adopted and refined the Persian gabbeh tradition using premium Ghazni wool, one of the finest natural wools available in the region, known for its long fiber, natural lanolin content, and exceptional softness underfoot. The thick pile that defines a quality gabbeh rug is a direct result of this wool, and it is what makes these rugs so extraordinarily comfortable to live with. Natural vegetable dyes produce the earthy reds, warm golds, deep blues, and muted ivories that give gabbeh rugs their characteristic warmth. These colors do not fade to nothing over time. They soften and deepen, the way genuinely natural materials always do.

Gabbeh rugs work particularly well in bedrooms, where their plush pile provides real comfort underfoot in the morning, and in living rooms where their bold, simple designs become a natural focal point without competing with everything around them. Their abstract tribal patterns suit modern minimalist interiors as well as bohemian and eclectic spaces, and they layer beautifully with other textiles. Because the pile is dense and the wool naturally stain-resistant, gabbehs are also a practical choice for homes with children or pets.
