Hand-Knotted Afghan Ziegler and Chobi Wool Rugs

Ziegler is a design, not a city or a tribe. The name belongs to Ziegler and Company, a firm based in Manchester, England that began commissioning handmade rugs in the Sultanabad region of Iran in 1883. Their brief to the weavers was specific: take the classical Persian floral tradition and simplify it, scale up the motifs, open up the field, and soften the color palette to suit the homes and tastes of Western buyers. The result was something that had not existed before in the rug world, a hand-knotted wool rug that combined the craftsmanship of the Persian tradition with a design sensibility that felt immediately comfortable in European and American interiors. Ziegler rugs went on to furnish the drawing rooms of Victorian England and the halls of the American Gilded Age.

Production eventually shifted away from Iran, and today the finest Ziegler rugs are hand-knotted in Afghanistan and Pakistan by skilled Hazara and Turkmen weavers. These contemporary versions are also known as Chobi rugs, from the Farsi word for wood, a direct reference to the warm earthy tones that come from dyeing hand-spun Ghazni wool with natural vegetable dyes. The colors are soft ivories, dusty golds, warm terracottas, sage greens, and faded blues. After weaving, many rugs go through a stone washing process that softens the pile further and gives the finished piece a gentle, slightly antique appearance that ages beautifully over years of use.

The bold oversized floral patterns and spacious field layouts that define a Ziegler rug work in rooms where other rugs would fight with the furniture rather than complement it. Interior designers consistently reach for Ziegler and Chobi rugs in neutral schemes, open plan living spaces, and transitional interiors where the goal is warmth and character without visual clutter. They suit living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home offices equally well, and their soft palette makes them one of the most forgiving rugs to style around existing furniture and decor.

We carry hand-knotted Afghan Ziegler and Chobi rugs in all standard sizes from small accent pieces through large 9x12, 10x14, and oversized room rugs. Every piece is one of a kind and ships free worldwide.
